It is the YEAR OF THE HUMANITIES. At least in Germany …! Since 2000 the Ministry of Education and Sciences chooses a motto and treats us with themed arrangements including exhibitions, performances, readings, publications etc. This year it´s the humanities´ turn and the initiators designed a not really thrilling web-site that announces all the events and helps us with definitions of the term “humanities”: Communicate, Arrange, Remind (www.abc-der-menschheit.de).

Well well well…

On the agenda we found amazing projects like:
Alphabetic character-installations! For instance the Free University here in Berlin hung up a large “F” (for “freedom”) and the University in Jena a “X” (for “Xenien”).
We are all asked for choosing a character that represents a humanistic term.

Hmmm…

We started to worry because we both study humanities and if these initiatives are designated to help our fields of study, it seems as if there is not much hope.

But: the editor-in-chief of the feature pages of DER SPIEGEL, Matthias Matussek (a very battlesome journalist who is fighting for a new form of patriotism in his books), came up with a help-full initiative. Since three weeks he appeals on his weekly video-blog for adopting a humanist.

So if anyone of you wants to adopt us, just let us know!
